Trained as a painter at the University of Canterbury, Michael Armstrong has consistently explored ways of combining flat painting with sculptural form for over twenty-five years.
He is well known as a colourist.
A bold and positive approach to art-making has gained him several major awards and prizes in New Zealand.

His work is in many major public collections in New Zealand and has been shown overseas.
In 1984 he was awarded the prestigious Frances Hodgkins Fellowship, which is a year's residency at the University of Otago, allowing the artist to spend the year making his own art.
